DRISS JABRANE
Marrakech
Moulay Driss Jebrane was born in 1968 in Marrakesh, where he lives and works. He studied from 1992 to 1994 at the National School of Fine Arts of Tetuan.
In the early 2000’s, Moulay Driss was capturing the faces of Gnawas presenting the Festival of Essaouira. With oil paint, he was focused on valorizing the light, which photography cannot under a natural lighting. But his impressionist technique will take him away from neo-orientalism. The artist will increasingly affirm the autonomy of the artwork by simplifying his painting, becoming more evocative.
It’s not by chance that Moulay Driss chose the trance theme, while his interest was growing toward calligraphy. The claim for freedom express itself through a growing valorization of gesture, allowing a better rendering of movement. In leaving the photographic sharpness, this painting will go more and more to a purification and refinement which is the foundation of spiritual alchemy.
