ABDELAZIZ ABBASSI

Abdelaziz Abbassi is a Moroccan artist and painter, who was born in 1957 in Beni Mellal, Morocco. Today, he lives and works in Marrakesh. In parallel of his career as an artist, he works as a teacher in the applied arts section in a High school in Marrrakesh.
It’s in 1988 that he will exhibit his first drawings in Fkih Ben Saleh, a small town of Central Morocco. This first exhibition was held in the Public Library, the Gallery of Oum Rabiaa Youth House, and in Café Tafilalet space. This will be the beginning of the pointillist era of his black and white ink artworks.
The pointillist era will be followed by the brown era, the Walnut monochrome. This era will extend from 1997 to 2000 in Fkih Ben Salah.
Finally in 2002, Abassi will start to introduce colors gradually to his artistic universe, « The Graphic era » as he defines it. This era is linked with several exhibitions in Marrakesh, specially at the Bab Doukkala Gallery, Jacaranda, at Artes Mundi, at the Marrakesh Museum .. and also exhibitions in Essaouira.
From 2003, he will held exhibitions at les Alizés city in Palazzo Desmonda, at Bab Sbaa Gallery, at Riad Zahra … His paintings are become rich with colors and graphic elements such as strokes, points, script, collage, braiding and other techniques.
The artwork of Abbassi are often small and medium formats, and the subjects are only pretexts for misappropriation of meaning and interpretations. He uses different tools to make a work of misappropriation and prolongation of an idea. The brush, the reed feather, the collage and the braiding will allow him to graphically enrich his artworks.
